Time Management Behaviors as Predictors of the Relationship between Education and Quality of Life

Abstract

The connection between education and health is now undeniable. However, the mechanisms or factors through which education influences health remain unexplained. We have focused on time management behaviors (TMB), which have been associated with higher academic performance as a potential mechanism contributing to the relationship between education and health. We propose that time management behaviors and education will predict health outcomes. A total of 356 individuals (80 males and 276 females) age 18 – 65 years participated in the study. They completed the quality of life (QOL) and TMB questionnaire, and reported their level of education. Correlation analysis explored the relationship between education, TMB, and QOL, while regression analysis investigated the predicted value of TMB and education level on QOL. Correlations studies uncovered positive correlations between education and all TMB subscales (p=.037 – .000). In regards to QOL, education displayed a positive correlation with sleep quality (p<.02), but negative correlation with anxiety (p<.05) and depression (p<.02). TMB correlated positively with physical functioning (p<.006) and sleep quality (p<.001), and negatively with anxiety (p<.005), depression (P<.001), fatigue (p<.002), and social functioning (p<.05). Regression analysis showed that TMB predicted all spheres of quality of life, except for social functioning and pain. The major finding of this work is that TMB, but not educational level, predicted functioning in the different spheres of QOL. Moreover, education only correlated with psychological aspects of QOL, while TMB and PCT correlated with all aspects of QOL. Education seems to affect psychological aspects of QOL more strongly than physical ones.
