Resident Rotation: Pioneering Ways to Care for Clinicians-in-training

Abstract

Clinicians practice in a complex culture: expected to treat and promote sick-care management, as well as encourage well-care management (i.e. self-care outside of clinic or hospital). While conceptually most believe in the value of self-care, many medical students and residents experience their personal comprehensive well-being practices diminish as they strive to be the “best in class”. Our collective practice serves the adage, “the needs of the patient come first;” we posit that clinicians re-engaging in or learning how to practice self-care is in alignment with Mayo Clinic’s (MC) axiom. The team at the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center partners with MC Internal Medicine residents to offer an experiential curriculum as a way to allow clinicians personal time to learn and engage in well-known and emerging health practices. We are increasing awareness of valuable and accessible resources through a participatory and reflective experience, which sheds light on a complex and widely occurring phenomenon.
