Abstract
As the experiences of marginalized people are drawn into public discourse how do mental health professionals embrace a social justice orientation to their work as helpers? In this discussion, we define social justice and explore the historical roots and modern-day application of the social justice. We will explore the questions, “what does social justice have to do with mental health?” and “why should it matter to me?” We will come to understand the nature of oppressive systems that social justice practitioners are working to dismantle and how these same systems show up in the field of mental health. We will understand the difference between social justice and multiculturalism and recognize how this distinction informs our work as helpers and service providers. By understanding the relationships between power and oppression that exists in our society we can bring this awareness into our work and reduce the presence of harmful discourse within the helping experience.
