Abstract
The treatment of transgender people has been historically fraught with discrimination. Moral issues arise in the maintenance of outmoded practices of making an individual prove they are transgender enough for the therapist to provide gender affirming care. Informed consent is a modern practice developed in concert with transgender people. Informed consent allows the individual to acknowledge risks of treatment, while also removing barriers such as requirements of a year of living in ones preferred gender before treatment and other performative stipulations of practitioners. Effects of these barriers include not only reduced quality of life but also self medication (hormones) and self mutilation as people transition by their own means. Gender affirming care that is culturally competent may include informed consent.
