Regular Assessment of Nutritional Status: The Prevention Management of Chronic Disease

Abstract

There is a better understanding of the complex interplay between nutrition and health today, and this has made nutritional assessment a key component in patient care. The prevalence of chronic diseases is increasing at an alarming rate world-wide in developed and developing countries and poses an immeasurable threat to global health, health care, national economy and premature death. The rapid increase in the incidence and prevalence of chronic disease burden makes the development of interventions against chronic disease burden very crucial. The nutritional status is the level of nutrient in the body and the ability of those levels to maintain metabolic integrity. It is traditionally defined in anthropometric terms. Nutritional status assessment reviews individuals whose present nutritional status is less than optimal even when no obvious health disturbances are felt. On the other hand, Chronic diseases are diseases that rarely undergo spontaneous resolution or complete cure.Research has shown that the primary causes of chronic diseases are influenced by diet. Nevertheless, existing evidence indicates that persons with chronic diseases often receive inadequate nutrition. In order to identify individuals or population groups at risk of developing chronic diseases and to develop health care programs that will prolong the lives of those with chronic diseases regular nutritional status assessment must be considered.
