The Impact of Digital Therapeutics on Addressing Wellness and Comorbidities

Abstract

As the traditional healthcare system supports limited and sporadic access to primary care, digital therapeutics are now paving the way to offering truly continuous care. Digital therapeutics’ ability to provide critical self-management support makes all the difference in patients’ physiological and psychological health. This split interest is key for the 1 in 4 Americans that live with multiple chronic conditions. 68% of adults with a mental disorder have at least one other medical condition. 43% of people with depression are obese. For patients that live in these intersections and others, regular check-ins and the reliability of a digital coach are essential to making real strides in overall health outcomes. The increased contact time and ongoing support from health professionals offered by digital therapeutics allows for significant positive behavior change on the part of the patient. In one case study wherein digital therapeutics were introduced to a workplace, employees were able to reduce anxiety and depression by 47% and 70%, respectively, through their use of a health app. Additionally, those going through a Diabetes Prevention program lost an average of 7% of their body weight over 6 months. Doctors leveraging digital therapeutics are seeing increased patient activation, medication adherence, and reduced hospital readmissions. The results? Better health outcomes, higher quality of life, and lower healthcare costs. In this talk, we’ll discuss the types of digital therapeutics we’re seeing in the market and examine their success in long-term behavior modification, especially in regards to treatment of chronic conditions and comorbidities.
