Fitness Culture, Health and Well-Being: An Institutional Ethnography across Fitness Centres of South Delhi, India

Abstract

The dominant forms of “physical culture” or the evolved format “Fitness Culture” have undergone made morphological and theoretical shifts amidst lots of stereotypical perceptions and sociological debates. Emerging from 19th century US and Germany primarily as a masculine or man-centered activity, have grown up to leisure-some activity. But it essentially came up to deal with the growing health-related concerns in societies of the now-developed countries. But in a developing country like India, the fitness spaces have a business-centered approach, rather than emphasizing upon the growing concern of non-communicable problems, such as heart problems, obesity, respiratory problems, gastrointestinal issues, stress etc. This study is a part of a primary research work(2016-17) where data was collected from the fitness centers of South Delhi, using an online questionnaire and institutional ethnography and also attending few sessions where the fitness trainers were trained about their traineeship. The results show very contrasting observations in terms of perceptions, uptake of the services of fitness centers proximal to them and the techniques of the trainers.
