At the Forefront of LGBT Health: The Story of Northwestern University's Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing

Abstract

This presentation focuses on the creation and management of the only university-wide research institute in the US focused exclusively on research on the health and well-being of LGBTQ people (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people). The institute is the Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing at Northwestern University in Chicago, where I am Associate Director. The presentation will discuss its history, founding, operations, research programs and projects, its role within the university and regionally, its strategic plan and future goals, its challenges and successes, and provide suggestions for other institutions who want to create a similar center. Additionally, this presentation addresses the meaning of social justice leadership, that is, the intentional effort of the institute leadership to lead and manage the institute in ways that do not replicate, and counter, existing discriminatory practices related to gender identity, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, socio-economic status, and disability.
