Plant Medicine Safety: Contraindications of Herbs and Essential Oils for the Professional

Abstract

Research has exploded on the use of plants in the newest branch of medicine, Functional and Integrative Medicine. Patients are using herbs, essential oils, and other supplementation without proper information on plant safety. Worse yet, practitioners have also not been educated on the topic. Most all of plant medicine is contraindicated in pregnancy, nursing, and in infancy, as well as further limitations being imposed on those with hormonal cancers, autoimmune disorders, or organ transplants. This PowerPoint presentation will discuss the history of plant medicine, research supporting the safe use of plant medicine today, and plants that should not be used concurrently with specific medications or in certain health states. Information used to present this information is extracted from dozens of peer-reviewed publications.
