Good Health Communication Practice to Reduce Patient-Physician Conflicts: Mass Media and We-media Should be Actively Involved

Abstract

Patient-physician conflict and hospital violence increases globally. Here, health communication theory (HCT) was used to analyze the violence. To reduce problems behind patient-physician conflict and hospital violence, we studied the media (traditional mass media and the we-media). The growing numbers of we-media in China (Weibo blogs, Wechat/Weixin individuals official accounts publications, and some messages distributed/reposting in bulletin board system and public pages) raised violence rates against doctors/hospitals.The performances of the traditional mass media and the we-media in China were evaluated to find their improper manners and reports that caused devastating effects on the healthcare system and medical reporters/publishers. Their voices and tones caused the conflicts unexpectedly and negatively affected the community and society. According to our research, there are too many “agenda setting” in current medical-news reports and programs on TVs and some others, which ruined audience-oriented standards and deviated from the news justice principle.
