Environmental Impacts of the Collapse of Wastewater Basins in the Village of Umm Al-Nasr in the Northern Gaza Strip

Abstract

Water for Life was declared the International Decade (2005–2015) for Action for Water by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005. The study presents the challenges of confronting an environmental disaster in Umm Al-Nasr village ponds, north of the Gaza Strip. It is investigating the impact of environmental and humanitarian disasters in Umm Al-Nasr village. One of the most important results of the study is the weakness of the strategic planning programs and infrastructure aimed at meeting the needs of the population, especially water supplies, sanitation, and electricity, as well as the increase in population growth rates in the Gaza Strip in light of the limited natural environment. Resources, especially land, have an impact on groundwater due to the lack of risk management and early warning programs. The lack of political horizons for sustainable political solutions between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli side is troubling. The study recommends the need to strengthen national unity and end division to unify development and emergency management requirements to overcome crises and measures to develop the Palestinian economy in Gaza in terms of operating the electricity station at the lowest cost, restructuring, and upgrading, increasing distribution lines, and financing future development projects.
