Enhancing Sustainable Education Environments: Innovative Design Strategies and Performance Assessment for a Greener Future

Abstract

Sustainability is now a central concern across various fields, recognized as a key driver for achieving sustainable development in society. Education, in particular, holds a pivotal role in this endeavor, as all sustainable development goals converge on it. This commitment extends to the realm of sustainable architecture, encompassing vital concepts such as low energy consumption, resource efficiency, and environmental quality. These elements work in tandem to enhance the quality of life while reducing energy use and environmental pollution. In this research, we aim to champion innovative strategies for sustainable school design, with a specific focus on the environment at Rujm Al Shami Southern school. Our study comprises two core components. The first focuses on identifying and addressing issues related to the comfort of school users, encompassing aspects like thermal conditions, visual environment, and acoustic quality. The second axis revolves around assessing the impact of proposed sustainability strategies on the overall performance of the school building, employing a simulation program, the Design Builder Program. Sustainability in educational spaces transcends the mere reduction of environmental impact; it also fosters the well-being of individuals and cultivates environmental awareness among users. By intertwining these dimensions, we aspire to enhance the physical and psychological well-being of the educational community and fortify its prospects for a sustainable future. This research endeavors to gauge and ameliorate comfort-related issues in schools, addressing the needs of students, staff, and administrators through the evaluation of the proposed sustainability strategies.
