Abstract
Public spaces play a pivotal role in shaping the urban landscape, serving as vital assets that contribute to the physical and mental well-being of local residents, and the social harmony of communities. The effectiveness of these spaces in fostering outdoor activity and communication among individuals hinges on a multitude of factors. In this study, we examine the relationship between the characteristics of public spaces and the number of users they attract. Our findings indicate that the inclusion of large, accessible lawns, well-maintained footpaths, seating areas, commercial facilities, and water features significantly increase the usage rates of public spaces. Conversely, the incorporation of ornamental vegetation, sculptures, and other landscape accessories show limited potential in stimulating outdoor activity rates. To optimize the use of public spaces, it is essential for urban planners and designers to prioritize user-oriented facilities that encourage active engagement over decorative elements. By designing public spaces with a focus on user-centered amenities, such as accessible seating areas, properly maintained pathways, and commercial services, communities can facilitate an increase in outdoor activity rates, ultimately contributing to the health and well-being of its residents. Thus, the role of public space design in promoting active and healthy lifestyles cannot be underestimated, and it is imperative for planners and designers to prioritize user-centric design in the creation of outdoor spaces.
