From Exclusion to Inclusion: An Exploration of Inclusive Spatial Design in Healthcare Environments

Abstract

This project investigates inclusive spatial design in healthcare facilities in order to alleviate exclusion and limited access to care for specific patients. It falls within the umbrella of healthcare design research and highlights the significance of inclusive design. The purpose of this research is to look at the connection between inclusive spatial design and healthcare facilities. The study also seeks to discover the critical aspects that lead to successful inclusive spatial design in healthcare settings. The study employed a qualitative research method known as interpretative phenomenology. Semi-structured interviews with healthcare workers, patients, and their families, as well as observation of the physical environment in healthcare settings, were used to collect data. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis, and themes were found and synthesized to answer the study objectives. According to the findings of the study, inclusive spatial design in healthcare settings may greatly increase the quality of treatment offered to patients. According to the findings, including patients in the design process can result in environments that better match their requirements, increase their sense of control and comfort, and promote dialogue with healthcare personnel. The study also identified other design strategies, such as flexible and adaptable spaces, the use of natural materials, and easy navigation, that may improve inclusive design in medical facilities. The research emphasizes the significance of inclusive spatial design in healthcare, which may improve patient outcomes. It suggests more study and emphasizes the need of healthcare facilities prioritizing inclusive design.
