Deep Human Ecology
Daniel Felipe Marín Vanegas
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Human cultures with a high degree of urban and technological development face a connectivity crisis with nature that provides its ecosystem services, threatening its sustainability on different spatial and temporal scales. This notion of nature's ecosystem services comes from an anthropocentric paradigm that understands humans and their built environment as something artificial, interpreted as unnatural. The civilizing process of these human societies that have separated nature and culture, biology and cognition, ecology and technology, etc., faces complex environmental problems that require reconnecting these realities. Global initiatives from ecological movements such as Fritjof Capra's Deep Ecology, combined with new research findings in human ecology, can provide a framework to address this crisis. This research presents the habitats of humans and other animals as a network bridging "natural" eco-systems of the environment and "artificial" techno-systems of the built environment. For this purpose, we use systemic thinking to develop a new area of study: techno-systemic studies. In such studies, we show how the habitat is present in both ecological and technological systems by bringing terminology from eco-systemic studies, such as the concept of levels of organization. This knowledge allows actions and practices caring for both biosphere and technosphere. The biosphere, sometimes called ecosphere, is the set of natural ecological systems (i.e., forests). The technosphere is the set of "artificial" technological systems (i.e., cities). Finally, this study allows us to move from an egocentric/anthropocentric to an ecocentric/biocentric paradigm, constituting the foundations of Deep Human Ecology, a knowledge branch reconciling nature and culture.

Arctic Resistance

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
In the summer of 1977, hundreds of Greenlanders and Danes went ashore in the abandoned town Qullisaat, Greenland. Only five years prior, the city had been forcibly shut down by the Danish government as a part of the ongoing Concentration Policy. Over the summer of 1977, Qullisaat became the group’s temporary home as a revival of the Inuit tradition aasivik, best translated to ‘temporary summer settlement’. I want to argue that Aasivik 77, as the 1977 summer in Qullisaat came to be known, was not only a temporary spatial manifestation of a countercultural back-to-the-land utopia. In the particular case of Greenland, Aasivik 77 simultaneously represented an anti-colonial reclaiming and rediscovering of Inuit relation to nature, culture, and traditions. The event became a starting point for individuals to imagine and practice alternatives to Western capitalist consumer society, while providing a social and spatial alternative to the harmful welfare colonial policies of the Danish state. After an explanation of the historical context of Aasivik 77, focusing on the concentration policies implemented by the Danish state in the 1960s, I will analyze Aasivik 77 in order to show how this specific event became a spatialized anti-colonial manifestation and a re-entanglement of Greenlandic modernity into the natural environment. In a time where Greenland is continuing its struggle for independence, it is crucial to investigate how Inuit and the Greenlandic population resisted waves of Danish led colonial development. Highlighting this political agency shows the power of bottom-up activism that might even inspire future decolonial strategies.

Naturlizing Delhi
Vanshika Kirar
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Colonial New Delhi was planned as a garden city. The subsequent era of planned development by the Delhi Development Authority saw the creation of an extensive hierarchical park system. This is a 'Garden in cities' approach. The problem of unsustainable urban growth trends is now beginning to engage the attention of planners and city manners. Delhi is a city-state with complex land use and land ownership pattern, urbanizing rapidly with severe pressure on land. This study considers how the cooperation of several agencies - planning, civic, infrastructure, land owing agencies, entities, and individuals would be essential to bring about the enhancement of green cover and in developing the connectivity corridors through the concrete jungle.

Dominance vs Balance
Felix Gottdiener,
Elizabeth Weitz
Workshop Presentation
Do we relate to our environment through dominance, or balance? What are some examples of human development that can be seen through these lenses? What would it mean to promote development that is balanced with the environment? This workshop begins with a 5-minute presentation on examples of dominance vs balance in current development. An exploration of the paradigm in areas such as resilience and architecture will be provided. This is followed by a guided discussion into the dynamic between dominance and balance in the design of space and place. Participants will be encouraged to define for themselves the meaning of dominance and balance in their current practice. The workshop will end with a group discussion exploring how future human development could be more cognizant of the power dynamics which govern our interaction with nature.

Distribution Urban Public Spaces Among Riyadh Residential Neighborhoods
Abdulwahab Alalyani
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Urban Open Space (UOS) promotes community health including daily activities, but these resources may not available, accessible enough, and or equitably distributed. This paper measures and compares spatial equity of the availability and accessibility UOS among low, middle, and high-income neighborhoods in Riyadh city. The measurement methodology for the UOS availability was by calculating the total of UOS with respect to the population total (m2/inhabitant), and the accessibility indicter by using walking distance of a 0.25 mi (0.4 km) buffering streets network. All UOS were mapped and measured using geographical information systems. To evaluate the significant differences in UOS availability and accessibility across low, medium, and high-income Riyadh neighborhoods, we used a One-way ANOVA analysis of covariance to test the differences. The findings are as follows; finding, UOS availability was lower than global standers. Riyadh has only 1.13 m2 per capita of UOS, the coverage accessible area by walking distance to UOS was lower than 50%. The final finding, spatial equity of the availability and accessibility, were significantly different among Riyadh neighborhoods based on socioeconomic status. The future development of UOS should be focused on increasing urban park availability and should be given priority to those low-income and unhealthy communities.

Beneficial Microbial Exposures in the Built Environment to Promote Health
Gwynne Mhuireach
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Increasing incidence of inflammatory diseases has been correlated with Western and urbanized lifestyles, which tend to have decreased access to outdoor nature, especially in lower income and marginalized communities. However, since humans evolved for millennia in the presence of environmental microbes associated with living vegetation, soil, and water, our immune systems are not only adapted to coexist with the majority of these microbes, but may even require that interaction to function properly. Evidence increasingly suggests that exposure to environmental microbiota, such as those associated with soil, may be important for establishment of normal gut flora and healthy immune system development. As a single gram of soil can contain billions of microbes, some of which may have immune-promoting qualities, integrating healthy living soil into urban built environments could provide large-scale public health benefits. Using next-generation DNA sequencing technology, we explored how soils in the built environment can contribute to human microbial exposures. Specific cases include backyard and community garden soil and earthen plaster as an interior finish material. Prioritizing equitable and accessible garden spaces in urban neighborhoods and using sustainable earthen materials in residential construction could augment urban-dwellers' interaction with soils and their microbiota, thereby fostering healthy immune development.

Heritage Values, Ethics, Aesthetics, Environment and Practices in Design, Architecture and Construction
Yang Liu
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper considers heritage values, ethics, aesthetics, environment, and practices in design, architecture, and construction by providing a case study of Aman Resorts (a Swiss-headquartered multinational hospitality company) in China. Four resorts have been operating in China since 2008. Three of them are related to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Sites, and one of them is not. This one was reassembled from 50 deconstructed ancient villas moved from Fuzhou, which were built hundred decades ago. 10,000 camphor trees were moved with these villas to construct this resort. By analyzing how Aman Resorts applied heritage values, ethics, aesthetics, environment, and practices into the design, architecture, and construction of these four resorts, we find a relationship was built between invisible culture and visible architecture. Further, this relationship creates a new trend of communication in the hotel and hospitality business. A simple relationship between business and consumer has been changed to a communication between a habit (contains invisible values and culture, man-made design, architecture, and construction and natural environment) and consumer through business. Eventually, we suggest a theoretical model of communication among design and creation, nature, and human civilization for design, architecture, and construction in the hotel and hospitality industry.

Green and Blue Strategies for Urban and River Flooding Control
Rubén García,
Sonsoles Vela
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) has rapidly evolved from a small military outpost to a sprawling metropolis and has doubled its population to over 4 million in recent years (and counting). This unprecedented demographic boom has brought uncontrolled urbanization to the city and is also testing the administration's ability to provide basic services to the population. If these urban issues are not addressed at present, climate change will be added to the continuous growth of the population, and both will exacerbate the already present issues. The main objective of this academic research is to design a holistic urban resilience and regenerative strategy, where its main elements are the more than 50km of river tributaries. For that, the project proposes a new "ecological infrastructure" that uses the rivers as the main element to tackle the city's most urgent challenges. The methodology of the project is organized into three different scales. The first analyses the city's development in terms of history, ecology, economics, and culture. The second scale proposes solutions through a comprehensive master plan. Finally, the third and smallest scale includes specific architectural interventions at the most urgent and significant sites. Therefore, this paper elaborates on the methodology and results from the process outlined above. In this case, we show a specific intervention focused on the use of green and blue infrastructure to control urban flooding and to show how this infrastructure can work as a public space for the citizens at the same time.

Women as Migration Victims - Human Rights or Environmental Rights
Fatema Jahan Sharna
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The linkages between human and environmental rights have become issues of vigorous debate and become particularly relevant as to issues of migration and gender equality present emergent challenges in the face of climate change. The forced migration of the Rohingyas into Bangladesh following persecution in Myanmar illustrates pressures put upon migrants and the indigenous communities in the areas to which they move. These pressures are especially acute for women, raising important considerations about gender equality. The paper explores these new facets of human and environmental rights, examining the case of the Rohingyas and indigenous communities of Bangladesh, highlighting pathways to gender-sensitive climate justice and equitable Human-Environmental Rights (HER).

Nature-based Solutions, a Pathway for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation
Israa Hanafi Mahmoud
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
In recent years, Nature-based Solutions (NBS) have up taken an important pathway within cities to unwind the effects of climate change. Since then, relevant research revealed that different mechanisms to implement NBS in the urban planning are needed to include diverse stakeholders in the processes of sustainable urban planning towards a reconciliation between humans and nature. Within these mechanisms, shared governance is used to collectively decide on specific pathways that cities can use towards adopting NBS in their spatial measures for climate change adaptation and mitigation on one hand. On the other hand, the intrinsic values from nature as a major stakeholder in the process are to be reconsidered. In this research, the development of the Metropolitan Territorial Plan (PTM 2021) of the city of Milan is discussed; specifically, the use of the NBS in the newly approved regulatory plan towards mitigating the current effects of climate change within the current strategic planning of Milan 2030. The PTM2021 discusses risks and vulnerabilities that may be tackled by nature as a priority such as sustainable land use and territorial equity. The established Pathway of shared governance within the PTM2021 is consistent with the guidelines expressed by the PGT2030 to increase and preserve the Natural Capital of the city within urban areas. Main NBS interventions from PTM2021 do look at mitigation of hydrological risks; as well as greening interventions that amplify the ecological networks of Milan. Hence, this research scope investigates the possible reconciliation of both humans and nature within the PTM2021.

Constructing Justice around Desalination
Brian O'Neill
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Conceptions of justice and the built environment now go hand in hand amidst escalating discussions of climate adaptation. This study articulates one expression of this urban tensions through a discussion of environmental justice discourses. The environmental justice (EJ) frame is a key feature of successful grassroots mobilization against the uneven distribution of environmental problems. But what happens when this discursive framework is questioned – when basic features of its established definition are made to serve, rather than contest, industry? The paper examines this dynamic through an ethnography of a high-volume desalination (potable ocean water) proposal - an object understand as an additional blight amidst a coastal wasteland. Findings indicate community groups and non-governmental organizations make normative EJ arguments about the high costs of desalination, community disruption, and industrial burden. Organized labor and public sector actors align with the private sector to promote desalination, using a competing series of arguments about high costs of alternatives, local independence, regional responsibility, and employment. Disentangling these discourses, the author argues that claims in favor of desalination are part of a cooptation process, conceived within the financial framework of “project finance” that ultimately facilitates community cleavage in favor of a class bias for a luxury commodity – purified ocean water. Linking environmental sociology and political economy, this research contributes to sociological and policy discussions about industrial infrastructure, calling scholars, activists, and decision-makers to attend to how environmental (in)justice politics adopts surprising meanings based upon social context amidst the expansion of financial capitalism.
