One of the daunting problems confronting the urban areas of developing societies of Sub-Saharan Africa is that associated with waste creation, transportation and disposal. The paper therefore examines waste creation, collection and transportation practices to final disposal in Akure south Local Government Council of Ondo State, Nigeria. It also highlights efforts made in the past to address waste management issue and discussed why the challenge persist. The data utilized in the paper were derived from a systematic survey of households’ characteristics, indicators of waste generation, collection methods and disposal practices in the council area. The basic data set for the paper was therefore collected using a structured questionnaire administered on selected household’s heads in Akure, In-depth interviews were conducted on officials of government departments and Agencies responsible for waste management in the area. In addition, this was supplemented with secondary data obtained from some published and unpublished sources The paper reveals that the Ondo Waste Management Authority is responsible for collection, movement, and disposal of wastes in the area through their appointed agents. The services of the appointed agents have been epileptic and lack sufficient equipment to undertake the task assigned them. Also, the households are unwilling to pay for wastes collection as some of the parts of the council are not covered by the activities of the waste collectors. The disposal of wastes in the area are not adequately undertaken. The study recommends improvement to forestall outbreak of tropical diseases.
