Assessing Quality of Life in the Neighbourhoods under Transformation: Evidence from Mashhad, Iran

Abstract

One of the consequences of unbridled urbanization is the decaying of old urban fabrics. Urban governance, thus, implements renewal transformation projects aim to revitalize physical and functional structures, retrieve socio-economic capacities, and improve residents’ quality of life. Ignoring the complicated mechanism of transformative interventions in the old urban fabrics can result in undesirable consequences, including an additional decline of the residents’ quality of life. Thus, this paper assesses the resident’ quality of life in the neighbourhoods under transformation projects, supported an experience from Mashhad, Iran. Adopting a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, this paper used a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods of impact assessment, including questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and direct observation. The results yield that renewal transformation intervention in the historical part of Mashhad has significantly reduced the resident’s quality of life, due to its undesirable physical, socio-cultural, and economic impacts and consequences.
