The Relation of the Values Attributed to Architectural Space, Spatial Culture, and Use

Abstract

The concept of value in conservation, which has been discussed since the beginning of the nineteenth century, has become one of the basic principles of preserving cultural heritage. Since the values attributed to cultural heritage assets are unique and stabile; may vary depending on time and conditions. This change in values also affects the conservation approach, usage, and spatial culture to be applied to the structure. This network of relations will be discussed in the scope of this study on Industrial Heritage structures, one of the newest titles of Cultural Heritage. Industrial Heritage is the heritage site where the change in the values attributed over time is best observed. The ‘Cer Modern’ building, which was mentioned in this study, was built in modern style in Ankara, capital of Turkey, in the first years of the republic. This building is an atelier that includes production, repair, and storage functions within the station campus, lost its functions due to developing technology and production conditions and remained idle. It has been transformed into a Contemporary Arts Center in Ankara by emphasizing its historical and cultural values correctly. In this study, determination of the values attributed to the building since its first use, their exchange, and effects on the culture of the place are traced.
