Evolution of Housing Models and Appropriation of Space in the Medina

Abstract

This study presents the strategies for housing ownership by the inhabitants of the old city of Annaba (Algeria). It develops the correspondence between the spatial layout of a building and the way its occupants settle in. The appropriation of space is considered as a process of development adapted to the lifestyle of individuals. It is a process in which they must organize themselves according to the specific context in which they find themselves. The approved adaptations and rectifications show the extent of the discrepancies between the spatial properties of their homes and their socio-cultural models.
