A Passive Strategy to Reduce Energy Consumption by Natural Lighting : A Comparative Study of Raouzna and Contemporary Houses in Biskra

Abstract

The aim of this research is to work toward restoring a traditional architectural device called the “Raouzna” which is defined as an horizontal opening in a ceiling located in the center of a family reunion space called “wast eddar”. Qualitative review and quantitative study using numerical calculation and simulation were conducted to evaluate the thermal performance of this element and measure its ability to control the distribution of lighting in a region of hot and dry climate. This study focuses on the comparison between Raouzna in an oasis and contemporary houses in the city of Biskra in order to come up with verified recommendations to improve the quality of natural lighting.
