Proposal For Requalification Of Central Areas With A Focus On Active Transportation: Case Study In Itajubá-Mg, Brazil

Abstract

Sustainable urban mobility presents new paths for urban planning issues, such as the prioritization of active transport (pedestrians and cyclists). Thus, urban and road design is used as an instrument capable of transforming and (re) organizing public spaces in safer and more democratic places. The objective of this work is to create a proposal of urban and road design applying the case study in Itajubá-MG. Called the “Calm Zone of Itajubá”, the road rehabilitation proposal brings new ways of using it to revive streets and underutilized spaces, establishing new speed limits, and creating spaces destined for the circulation and permanence of pedestrians and cyclists. The resulting proposal aims to contribute with studies for future interventions in small and medium-sized municipalities, improving the quality of life and valuing the active transport for sustainability in areas daily frequented by a large part of the population.
