Abstract
One of the wonders of New Spain is undoubtedly the Augustinian convent of Yuriria, in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. The magnificence of its architectural plan, a source of amazement over the centuries, has drawn attention from various authors. The history of Yuririapúndaro, like the process of colonization of Mexico, is full of contradictions. This study explores historical sources of the sixteenth century, which record the official history of the conqueror, and in this case, that of the Augustinians who served as founders of the convent and colonizers of a vast territory. However, when they speak about the convent, they emphasize the uniqueness of its facade, and forget events that led the foundation of the convent, which are equally interesting.
