Innovation and Technology Versus Traditions and Identity in Designing Cities : New Visions for Urban Life

Abstract

This paper investigates how innovative and technologies change city identities. The topic draws on sustainability, smart architectural design, and city scope. It investigates how sustainable is a smart city design with green architecture. The research is carried out in two directions. At first, it is important to know what is sustainability. Then what are the characteristics of smart design. In accordance with these definitions and also other definitions from the literature, it is understood that, smart city concept, is a comprehensive description that comprises different sides of the city such as, people, living, buildings, energy, transport and mobility, government, management and economy. The key matter of all these concepts is to raise the quality of citizens life. Since smart city is the preferred term of sustainable development in recent years, our question is, will technology based solutions (ITC) improve the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of the future cities? This paper discusses this questions. At the same time, it compares traditional designs and architecture with innovative designs in terms of sustainability.
