Eco-Urbanity as an Approach to Open Spaces Sustainable Design

Abstract

We live in an increasingly globalized world in which the continuation of dominant power structures relies on practices that are extremely damaging to both natural and man-made environment. This paper positions the importance of ecological design into the field of space production. The overarching questions addressed by the researcher in this paper into the field of ecological urbanity include: 1) What current ideas and practices in the production of space have the potential to contribute to much-needed ecological change? 2) Which of those ideas and practices may be recognized as process in the right direction? 3) Which of them could be translated as a checklist for an active contribution to the necessary design shift? This has led the search to achieve its objectives by adapting qualitative and quantitative methods such as: A) ecological variables and urban elements data were gathered from literature and also by conducting on site survey-by researcher-to identify, quantify, categorize and create a checklist that was monitored and reduced by B) establishing semi-structured interviews to track users perception for Ecological-urban variables with a sample size of thirty users from different ages, genders and social backgrounds; then at last C) formative scenario analysis was the main method to transfer qualitative data to quantify the active role of Eco-urban variables-Impact variables-within the selected open space. This paper includes an Eco-urban checklist that may be used to track availability of these variables within an open space also; an assessment tool for open spaces was tested in a selected case-study.
