Analysis of Structural Conditions of Nova São Rafael : A City Transported to Make Way for a Dam

Abstract

This study problematizes an analysis of the structural conditions of the new São Rafael / RN city that was planned and transported from one place to another in 1980 for the construction of the Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves dam. In this investigation, the structural conditions of the buildings that were built to supply the demand of the resident population in the old São Rafael were analyzed. Methodologically, we resorted to bibliographical, field, and documentary research. The data obtained indicate that most of the residences and commercial and public buildings were built in the center of the new city according to the initial planning, the streets and the size of the existing buildings were designed according to the old São Rafael, some of the buildings are still in good condition despite having already been 28 years, others deteriorated very fast and some no longer exist, this because of the material used in these buildings that according to testimonies were of poor quality. As for the urban infrastructure, electrical, hydraulic and sanitation facilities were carried out. As for projects related to afforestation and recovery of flora there were none, and finally no public recreation area was built like squares.
