Mapping Safety and Security Concerns: Women, Diffferently-Abled People, and Other Minority Perspectives on the Built Environment

Abstract

This discussion is designed to explore participants’ concerns about the safety and security aspects of publicly constructed spaces and the extent to which we can anticipate those concerns as they relate to women, disabled persons, LGBTQ individuals (especially gender-nonconforming persons), and other often-marginalized communities. I’m CEO of Red Dot Foundation Global, which is working with Safecity in India to crowdmap sexual assault and harassment in public places. Safecity routinely does safety audits of public settings to assess the constructed environment for safety aspects, particularly as then relate to women and other under-voiced people. We have developed some standard practices but would like to engage with a broader pool of interdisciplinary persons to expand our considerations.
