Abstract
Housing for all in the new millennium was a team slogan in the world at the tail end of the twentieth century going into the twenty-first century, making shelter for all possible look like a mirage to third-world countries due to the economic challenges in these countries. Is this achievable? In order for this to be possible an alternative material is needed to be researched to find a better solution for materials and more cost-effective ways of constructing low-cost housing for all in the new millennium. This paper will take a look at different types of housing with the material used in the construction of these houses, also examining the process of sourcing for the materials for construction in relationship to the cost of materials. It will also provide alternative material, latarite soil, as a major material for house construction in the twenty-first century, adressing the impact it will have on the economic environment of Nigeria.
