Case Studies in Public Participation and Regeneration Projects

Abstract

It is a fact that the decision for regenerating an area does not necessarily mean the success of the project. A series of factors related to the design, but also to the overall procedures and concept of the project, are those which help greatly towards the success or failure of a regeneration. Thus, it is usually mentioned that a regeneration project is dependent on market conditions and on public participation. A common question is how important is public participation for a regeneration project in order for it to be a successful one? This question is highly important within the Greek urban environment as public participation practices are not as active as elsewhere. In order to approach this query, research was conducted in which case studies of regeneration projects were thoroughly examined. The research explores how important public participation was in the regeneration process. Literature review is the main methodology used; however, information derived also from the press as well as from interviews were used. Results are drawn on the basis that public participation is highly related to the success and acceptance of regeneration projects. Lastly, issues of changes in the public participation processes are analyzed for further integration in future studies and projects.
