Universal Exhibitions of the 19th Century and the Impact on Technological Innovation in Brazil

Abstract

The paper presents partial results of an ongoing research whose objective is to analyze the relationship between Brazil’s participation in the Universal Exhibitions of the 19th century and the impact generated on innovation processes, from the patent granted to exhibitors. In this paper, the case of the country’s participation in the Centenary Exhibition of Philadelphia in 1876 is observed, dialoguing with historiographical studies on the subject. The analysis was developed from the intersection between data from the Official Catalog of the 1876 Exhibition - with the record of Brazilian exhibitors awarded ― and those inventors who had achieved patent registration, based on the analysis of the Fundo Privilégios Industriais of the National Archive.
