Does AI Pose an Existential Crisis?

Abstract

This paper will explore the ways in which technology, particularly smart phone use, impacts our understanding of communication and learning. These two modes of being are central to humanity and are defining qualities of it. Specifically, I’d like to examine the cultural shift with respect to the youth and the new methods for interaction and information. Are trends to employ smart phones for quick searches, posts, updates, and meeting people romantically merely a movement forward or is something lost? What does it mean, then, to advance technologically speaking? If something is lost, what is this “something”? What can AI not replace and why? For this paper I’ll be using the work of Ursula Franklin, Nicholas Carr, and Sherri Terkle.
