Public Attention on Online Security in Nigeria: A Spatio-temporal Assessment

Abstract

Increasing access to the internet and access to a computer have brought about great opportunities for many people across many countries. Consequently, there is an increasing amount of online information, traffic and online security threats. Recent increase in the threat of ransomware and other threat makes it very important to understand public attention on this issue. This study explores the spatial and temporal pattern of public attention on online security using data from Google trend. Search index was collated from Google trend platform for the search term “antivirus” in a cross sectional period of 2011-2016. Exploratory analysis reveals that there is a continuous decline in public attention on online security over the years. Public attention is relatively more among the North-Central States than other regions, while Osun State has the highest public attention on this issue relative to other States. Examination of yearly trend indicates a seasonality in public attention, while attention over the years centres on looking for free antivirus and Avast Antivirus software. The result gave an indication that there is a need for raising awareness of online security among all users, with the aim of limiting the potential damage such threat pose to the development and diffusion of ICT innovations and economic wellbeing of the nation.
