Interactive Storytelling in the Online Reality Metaverse

Abstract

At the intersection of Virtual Reality and fiction filmmaking, there are serious questions and challenges. The central problem concerns itself with the nature of interactivity. How do writers and directors seeking to tell comedies, dramas and genre stories in the VR space allow for interactivity? The passive nature of film viewing appears at first glance to be in direct conflict with the inherent interactive nature of VR. My research and experimentation has led me to create a new storytelling/game playing hybrid experience called “story-gaming” in which audiences experience fiction stories from within an immersive, 3D, Computer Generated online world with as much, or as little, interactivity as they prefer. This experience seeks to blend the passive storytelling of fiction film with the interactivity more commonly found with VR gameplay. I have produced several iterations of this ‘story-game’ and have interviewed the actors and audience members to gain insight as to the efficacy of this new hybrid form. This paper documents these experiments in order to better understand how fiction filmmakers can utilize interactive online reality technologies to evolve our craft to tell ever more immersive and emotionally compelling stories. If the conference allows, I would propose to run this VR performance with volunteers from the audience.
