Bourdieusian Capitals - Implications for Sport Policy: How Social, Economic, and Cultural Capital in Sport Can Be Boosted through Public Policy

Abstract

Social, cultural, and economic capital are significant assets for protagonists in the sports sector such as athletes and coaches, providing opportunities for development, success, and recognition. This paper explores the definitions and benefits of these capitals and discusses how they contribute to the success of these protagonists, with illustrative examples from a variety of sports and cultures. It also examines some limitations of current sports public policies aimed at athletes and coaches and recommends changes to support their development and success that will benefit them, as well as have positive externalities for the rest of the sports sector and society as a whole.
