Socio-cultural Legacy of the Olympic Games: A Case of Sochi 2014 in Russia

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyse the development and engagement with the socio-cultural infrastructure in the host city of Sochi to determine the socio-cultural legacy outcomes related to the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games and the associated Cultural Programme. This infrastructure includes the organisations and projects that promote, coordinate, support, and manage the socio-cultural legacy. The research used a case study approach and mixed methods of data collection. The analysis included key documents such as official reports from Sochi 2014 and the International Olympic Committee, as well as in-depth interviews with key informants responsible for the Cultural Olympiad (such as the Deputy Head of the Cultural Department and the Deputy Head of the Department of Tourism and Olympic Legacy of the Sochi City Administration) and a focus group with civil servants in charge of delivering the event. A survey was also conducted among Sochi City residents and tourists. This research provides valuable insights into the under-researched Sochi 2014 Olympic Games in Russia and contributes to the limited knowledge on evaluating post-event socio-cultural legacies over time. It highlights the importance of strategic planning and coordination among stakeholders before and after the Games to achieve a positive socio-cultural legacy. The findings of this research have implications for future Olympic host cities and governing bodies in creating sustainable event-related legacies. Overall, this project offers academic insights and practical recommendations for current and future Olympic host cities and governing bodies in developing sustainable event-related legacies.
