Recently Concussed Athletes' Attitudes and Perceptions of Sport-related Concussion Assessment Tools

Abstract

This paper explores the attitudes and perceptions recently concussed athletes have toward concussion assessment tools. Nine athletes participated in semi-structured interviews. Interviews were analyzed using a qualitative framework most representative of Thematic Analysis (TA), supplemented with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and Autoethnography. The findings indicate that recently concussed athletes felt these tools are helpful initially but advocated for greater specificity in questions relating to physical and psychological domains. Together, these results provide accounts of recently concussed athletes’ lived experiences with concussion tools. The implications of these findings for concussion assessment tools in sports are discussed.
