Didier Drogba and His Teammates Helped End the First Ivorian Civil War: Sports and Politics Case Study

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Claudia Ribeiro Pereira Nunes,  Rafael Ribeiro Gonçalves

This paper introduces a framework between sports and politics with a case study: The national soccer team helped end the Ivory Coast civil war. When the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification phase began in mid-2004, it brought some respite from the lingering political impasse in this African country. The Ivory Coast was embroiled in a bloody civil war at the time of the match. So, it was light relief for many Ivorians growing desperate to return to normalcy because of the 2006 World Cup. Through the literature review, we understood that the study of international relations purports to explain how nation-states and individuals interact around the globe. And we can help with the storytelling of the Ivory Coast players who had made history, securing their place at the 2006 World Cup and their first-ever appearance at the global tournament with a 3-1 victory away over Sudan. In this context, some research outcomes and findings are: (i) Soccer passion can stop a civil war as happened with the First Ivory Coast Civil War.; and (ii) Sports and politics should positively have a bond when promoting nationality and cohesion community.

Scientific Strategy for the Study of Sports Practice in an Educational Organization

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Juan Manuel Herrera Caballero,  Jessica Herrera Martell

In this work, some considerations regarding sports practice are presented, as well as different structures that enable scientific research within the topics that concern sports activity. The specifications of the case study with qualitative and quantitative methodology are shown, as well as examples of interviews. The importance of sporting activity as an organized discipline is highlighted and the position of those who practice a sport is identified. The scientific research strategy proposed for the study of sports practice is the case study strategy, which is a powerful and reliable tool for the explanation of the phenomena that can be investigated in the field of sports. An exploratory instrument was carried out, using a binary questionnaire, with 60 students from a Mexican university, in the area of sports activities. Subsequently, a survey was applied, divided into three parts that considered the family, academic and social contexts. A variability coefficient analysis was carried out for each item. Subsequently, a Likert-type questionnaire was developed for the same people. Positioning interviews were also carried out with them, with the aim of knowing the concept they have about sport. It was obtained that the students' thinking towards sporting activities is not one of total involvement, but rather they define sport as a complementary and mediating activity to relax, eliminate stress and as a method of maintaining health, which allows them to complement their social development as a human being.

Subjective Well-being and Sports Practice in a Work Organization

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Jessica Herrera Martell,  Juan Manuel Herrera Caballero

A fundamental characteristic of men and women is living in society, where they carry out their daily activities such as working, studying, playing, competing, etc. Being in constant physical activity is a fundamental part of the existence of human beings and makes up a set of actions that are aimed at satisfying their needs and interests. Physical activity fulfills a well-being function for individuals, based on the need to move and even more so when this practice becomes a sport. The subjective well-being approach of Edward Diener (2009) is taken up as a way to know how the individual evaluates his or her life and satisfaction with it, by identifying whether the practice of sports activities contributes to evaluating his or her own life in a satisfactory manner. The study was carried out in a research institute in Mexico, where the exercise has been incorporated as a practice of the organization, in its integral activities. A quantitative instrument was used, adapted from that proposed by Diener and applied to a sample of workers. It was found that subjective well-being is expressed in the family, school, friendly relationships and couple relationships. The level of well-being found in people, with sports activity, is moderately high for workers who carry out sports activities and, in turn, this impacts on an increase in well-being in the areas found, impacting the health of individuals as the positive elements over negative ones.
