Olympic Values Education In-Practice for Physical Educators and Sport Leaders: Olympic Sport Education for Individuals, Groups, and Teams View Digital Media

Workshop Presentation
David James Waters

Sport as a possible source for "inner improvement," "a peaceful and better world," and "joy of effort" were Modern Olympic Games Founder Pierre de Coubertin's core outcomes for individuals and nations. Therefore, using themes and values of Olympism and the Olympic Movement, the author has led youth and adults, cross-culturally in multiple venues, in order to blend sport with development of body, will, and mind. He will present activities successfully implemented to experience Ancient and Modern Olympics. Students selected and introduced their Greek culture/city-state, then represented them after learning of integrity with the athletes/officials' oaths, followed by stade run, javelin, diskos, and halteres jump. These Games revealed diversity of sport as well as co-operative abilities of sport with organizational assistance of participants. At a distinctive beach venue, the author assembled small "Olympic Teams" who advanced their learning of the Olympic Movement with their creation and subsequent introduction of sand art; these included rings, images, venues, and tangible Olympism! Later, tug-of-war participants aspired, as well as inspired, teammates' strength and persistence in a rope-pulling in the sand. Mini-ceremonies can also be utilized for concluding recognitions of outstanding performances, as well as myriad outcomes in sport history, leadership, diversity, among others. The author will introduce these Sport Education events which have been undertaken at a National Olympic Academy and within university courses (e.g., Physical Education, Sport History, Sport Management, and Leadership).
