Posture in a Divided America

Abstract

This paper uses a fantasy-themed analysis to discuss the narratives Democratic and Republican politicians used following the NFL Take a Knee protest, began by de facto leader Colin Kaepernick. These politicians include Ted Cruz, Cory Booker, Tim Scott, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, Nancy Pelosi, and John Cornyn. The second half of the chapter uses social identity theory to analysis how much, if at all, the base of each party was influenced by what respective politicians said, but the focus of this presentation is the fantasy theme as that was this presenter’s focus, though there will be a mention of the latter’s results. Two major fantasy themes arose from politicians from each party, Right & Values, and Progress, or the lack thereof. Both parties agree protesting is intrinsically American, but Republicans believe everyone should stand for the anthem. In terms of progress, Democrats believe President Donald Trump stunted it when he called NFL protesters “sons of bitches.” Both parties claim disrespect, Republicans that the flag is being disrespected and Democrat claiming the protesters must be respected. It is interesting that none of the grassroots citizens followed what politicians, other than President Trump, said; however, that doesn’t stop politicians from seeking to create and control a narrative that fits their worldviews.
