Advanced Leadership Practice through Athletics: Embracing the Jesuit Mission

Abstract

The pressures on the student-athlete in NCAA Division I institutions are immense. They have a dual requirement to perform at the highest collegiate level in their sport as well as maintain their status as a student. At Seattle University (SU) there are additional requirements that all students share pertaining to the mission of the school. SU is dedicated to educating the whole person, to professional formation, and to empowering leaders for a just and humane world (SU, 2018). Within this context, the present study investigated the level of awareness of the SU mission for male and female student-athletes prior to taking the survey, when engaged in classroom activities, when involved in student body clubs and activities, and, when engaged in community service. The respondents were asked to designate their gender and the number of years they have been on campus. Fisher’s Exact Test revealed that females tend to have higher awareness of the SU mission compared to males.
