Understanding Athlete Maltreatment and Sports Bullying : Mental Health and Performance Implications

Abstract

Very often athletes are viewed as pampered, entitled, or even spoiled but the research indicates that athletes are at risk of poor treatment from coaches and others. The purpose of this discussion is to explore the maltreatment athletes encounter within sports. Participants will learn about the different forms of sports bullying which includes verbal, cyber, homophobic, social, and physical. We will also discuss who are the offenders as well as how this mistreatment has profound effects on athletes’ performance and/or mental health. In addition, an actual case study will be presented for further insight.
