The Construction of the Olympic Landscape of Rio de Janeiro: Nature and Ruins in the Institutional Discourse

Abstract

The paper investigates how the landscape of Rio de Janeiro was used as a resource in the oficial narrative of the urban transformations for the sports megaevents, especially the 2016 Olympic Games. We start from the candidature video and excerpts from the Olympic Dossier to analyze how the natural landscape of the city was presented as a pleasant element to the eyes of foreigners, and even helped to elect the city as a host of the Olympic Games. On the other hand, Rio’s degraded landscapes shown on some of the videos and photographs published in the institutional website Cidade Olímpica (Olympic City) were intended for the internal public, the residents of the city, serving as justification for the great urban interventions.
