Headed to the Past or to the Future: Are Team Sports Values Countercultural?

Abstract

The traditional values of teamwork, cooperation, collaboration, working for the greater good, putting team ahead of self, loyalty, and such, are no longer values that are as honored, encouraged, and reinforced in our society at large. There has been a tremendous paradigm shift inculcation of values that are seen as important to a “successful” life. Values that were once commonly recognized as key elements to a “complete” and successful life are may not be applicable to our current social condition. The fundamental question arises whether or not sports are simply a means to achieve individual recognition and accolade or are they an important vehicle to the development of an individuals character.
