Abstract
Growing up in south Louisiana, sports were an indelible part of the fabric of my life. Whether it was watching Joe Namath throw touchdowns, George Foreman fighting Ali in Zaire, or hunting and fishing with family, I can measure the development of my own identity through sporting events. This presentation will examine the impact of sport, both played and watched, on the development of individual identity as expressed in poetry published in my latest collection, Smoke, Mirror (Pint Size Publications Press, 2017). Through a combination of readings and autobiographical analysis, I hope to illustrate the power of sports to shape lives as well as art.
