Abstract
This historical study will explore how the NCAA, through its committee on infractions used its power to target historically black school Howard University to take away a hard-earned national soccer title in 1971. The study also looks into how during the struggle for civil rights, Americans witnessed the insidious disease of racism take a big blow, as Howard University’s soccer program reclaimed the 1974 title using a theme termed as “Black Excellence” by head coach Lincoln Phillips.
