The Triumphs and Tribuiations of Reclaiming an Historic National Title

Abstract

This historical study will explore how the NCAA, through its committee on infractions used its power to target historically black school Howard University to take away a hard-earned national soccer title in 1971. The study also looks into how during the struggle for civil rights, Americans witnessed the insidious disease of racism take a big blow, as Howard University’s soccer program reclaimed the 1974 title using a theme termed as “Black Excellence” by head coach Lincoln Phillips.
