Injury Type and Stress, Fear, Mood, and Psychological Response to Sport Injury

Abstract

We examined the effects of severity of sport injury on psychological response to sport injury, mood state, life stress, fear avoidance, psychological distress, and perceived social support in fifty-five male or female student-athletes that attended Jackson State University, whose ages ranged from 18-25. Student-athletes experienced a minor, moderate, or major sport-related injury during the Fall or Spring semester of the 2016-2017 academic year. Preliminary results indicated significant correlations between the instruments. Data analysis suggests that when a minor, moderate, or major injury occurs, student athletes are overwhelmed with many different emotions such as: frustration, anger, fear of re-injury, and stress.
