Abstract

The paper appraised the situation of stadium infrastructure in Nigeria within the ambit of availability and usability. This appraisal was limited to only stadium with minimum fifteen thousand (15,000) seating capacity and was carried out in comparison with the situation in Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt and Algeria and national population of the countries as at 2013 estimates. The ergonomic compliance and the 3s factors of safety, suitability and sanitation were appraised. It was found that combined spectator caring capacity of the twenty-seven (27) stadia with minimum 15,000 seating capacity is Seven hundred and twenty-one thousand (721,000) in Nigeria. South Africa has fifty-one (51) of same stadia; Egypt has thirty-seven (37), while Algeria has thirty-eight (38) of such stadia in this same category. The combined spectator caring capacity of the stadia in South Africa is one million, eight hundred and fifty-two thousand and four twenty (1,852.420). That of Egypt stood at one million, twenty thousand, two hundred and twenty-five (1,020,225) and that of Algeria stood at one million, one hundred and forty-three thousand, five hundred and ninety-three (1,143,593). The low combined caring capacity of the stadia in Nigeria was established. The ergonomic compliance with regards to the Special Sports Population and the 3s factor were observably not satisfactory. These findings informed the recommendations made which included the need for further investigation into the 3s factor and usability of various stadia across Nigeria given that they are available.
