Leadership Behaviors of Effective Interscholastic Athletic Coaches

Abstract

The conceptual framework for this dissertation included multiple research studies that found that great athletic coaches exhibit behaviors that are consistent in nature. The objective of this study was to extend the theoretical framework to western Oklahoma high school coaches, with the goal of presenting the data in a clear, concise manner for practitioner use. From this research, three themes regarding athletic coaches’ leadership behaviors emerged: teaching, learning, and caring. Leadership behaviors taught to aspiring coaches who have a growth mindset and exhibit the attributes of a life-long learner, ultimately benefit themselves as well as the student-athletes with whom they interact.
