Helping Ubiquitous Learners “Know How to Know”: Just-in-time Inclusive Modules for Successful Navigation of Information

Abstract

Ubiquitous computing is exciting because it offers immediate access to information and allows for the creation of knowledge as well as the opportunity to participate in this rapidly evolving knowledge society. But knowledge, truth, and authority are tricky and continuous exposure to information means that our students are constantly making judgments regarding these three. Finding and using information online is a lot more difficult than they are ready to admit and we see that in their work. That is why at our university, we have collaborated with the Universal Design Center and our distance learning college to create a series of just in time multimodal learning objects utilizing the tenets of Critical Information Literacy and Universal Design for Learning that can be embedded in our university’s LMS to help students navigate this information world. We have taken into consideration different learning styles and needs guided by theories of collaborative and interactive learning that inform our selection of content and technology. We have worked with the Universal Design Center on campus to ensure accessibility, and have met with different centers on campus including our Pride Center, Dream Center, and Veteran Center to ensure that marginalized students feel represented. In this workshop we will share access to our creative commons licensed modules and the tools and tips we used to make them all while utilizing the Universal Design for Learning tenets of multiple means of representation, multiple means of action and multiple means of engagement.
