Best Practices in Supporting Student Success in Online Presentations: From the First-year Student to the Graduating Senior

Abstract

Through a series of scaffolded hands-on activities, participants will address the dynamics of learning in and through digital technologies in a pragmatic way which results in a tangible product. The workshop participants will generate a list of student learning outcomes addressing oral communication in digital communication contexts. The principles and best practices in using asynchronous speaking opportunities, such as VoiceThread, in teaching the process of creative and organized script writing, visual aid selection, and peer feedback are shared. The use of synchronous sessions using Zoom for speech presentations and mock employment interviews is described. Using a template created by the facilitators, workshop participants will craft a draft assignment using either VoiceThread or Zoom. The facilitators will also use the following pedagogical strategies in the workshop: Live polling software to engage participants in critical thinking of their own practice and workshop reflection and a “Shift and Share” structure that provides group stations for quick sharing of ideas and innovations across a large group. By the end of the workshop, each participant will: List specific student learning outcomes for online oral communication skills using new technologies, develop a speaking assignment based on best practices in learning in and through digital technologies, share their assignment with other participants for their feedback, and make suggestions for editing the oral communication skills assignment template. The presenters will create a Google Team Drive of the draft assignments developed by the participants who are willing to share their ideas with others after the workshop.
