‘Children always keep a-hold of Nurse for fear of finding something worse’ (Hilaire Belloc)

"From Penny Dreadful’s to the Daily Mail, How the Ruling Class has Controlled the Power Narratives for Decades"

Chaos and Order are the fundamental elements of a life lived, the yin and yang of the universe, the complementary forces that form a dynamic system of change and renewal. But the main aim of the Press barons around the world is to maintain and enforce the status quo. The methods they use can be traced to attitudes learned in childhood and often form a style of publication that dates back to the Victorian era's obsession with class and power.  In this session, Professor Mario Minichiello looks at the mediated narratives (text and Image) that have shaped and continue to influence the attitudes of the mainstream press and the implications for the future.

Professor Mario Minichiello Is the co founder and director of FASTlab Cambridge UK and is Hon Professor At the University of Newcastle as well as a visiting Professor at a number of other institutions. He was formally the political artist for the BBC Newsnight and for the Guardian newspaper. He has published and exhibited extensively and has been associated with Common ground for many years.
